AUTUMN LEAVES “Negative Painting” Watercolour Workshop

DATES: Two Sessions available

Saturday October 6, 2018
Friday October 19, 2018

TIME:  1-4:30 pm

LOCATION: Studio 206, Upper Floor of the Alton Mill Arts Centre

COST:  $85 + HST per person/per session

Nothing says “autumn” more than the glorious colours of the leaves changing. In this workshop you will learn a beautiful technique known as “negative painting”. Typically when working in watercolour we paint “in the positive”, meaning we add one shape on top of another. Negative painting is an intriguing, alternative approach in which the subject is established by painting around the object rather than by painting the object itself. In other words, you define various objects from close to distant, gradually revealing their shapes gradually and creating more depth and dimension with each layer of color you add. The magic is in the “reveal”!

Negative painting uses some very traditional watercolour techniques – wet-in-wet technique and glazing. In this class you will learn how to apply both techniques to achieve the beautiful negative painting effect. If you have taken a watercolour class with CJ before you will love learning this alternative approach for creating rich, layered paintings.

New students are also welcome, even complete newbies who have never tried watercolour before! If you have taken sessions with CJ this one will build on your previous drawing or painting skills and add additional ones to your repertoire. Please bring any watercolour brushes or paints you currently have although supplies will be available for those who don’t have them. Paper and stretching boards will be supplied.

The Celtic festival of “Samhain” (pronounced ‘sow-wen’) is the pagan origin of our modern day All Hallows Eve or Halloween. This was an important time for our ancient ancestors as it marked the beginning of the Dark Half of the Year or winter. Traditionally celebrated around the first of November, this was the time when the ‘veils between the worlds’ were thin, meaning spirits, ghosts and goblins could pass easily from the world beyond into ours. It was also a time for remembering and honouring the ancestors or appeasing restless souls.

Join artist CJ Shelton to learn more about where our Halloween customs came from as you weave your own traditional ‘Witches Ladder’ from wool, ribbon and found objects. Locally farmed alpaca wool plus twigs, berries and other organic bits and pieces gathered from the forests and meadows will also be used to make the “ladders”. You may also bring along any other meaningful small objects that you would like to incorporate into your spell weaving.

This is a wonderful way to “harvest” your dreams and set new intentions, thoughts and prayers for the winter ahead. Your finished ‘ladder’ can be hung indoors or outdoors where it can send its message out into the spirit world as it protects your home.
