ARTS | CULTURE | HERITAGE | ENVIRONMENT
Standing proudly over falls that were harnessed by pioneering settlers 130 years ago, the Alton Mill is now a vibrant arts centre featuring some 20 artists and artisans in working studios, 4 art galleries, a fibre art and fashion market, hand-crafted jewellery, a heritage exhibit, and café.
The magnificent restoration, completed in 2009, earned the Heritage Canada Foundation’s National Achievement Award for Adaptive Re-use along with a slew of other national, provincial and regional awards. The melding of thick stone walls and timber structure with modern architectural elements make the Alton Mill the perfect venue for art lovers from every walk of life.
Discover painters, potters & photographers, jewellery, glass & textile artists and galleries featuring contemporary Canadian and international art. You can buy a gift or a work of art for your home or office, or develop your own creative skills in one of many classes and workshops ranging from acrylic or encaustic painting, to pottery or jewellery making. You can even go for a hike, on a trail that meanders past a breathtaking stonewall sculpture in the forest, to the Millcroft Inn and Spa. All in an idyllic waterside setting, less than an hour northwest of downtown Toronto. The mill is open to visitors year-round, Wednesday to Sunday, and Holiday Mondays 10am-5pm.
